Warts

Treatment for foot and ankle warts

Plantar or foot warts, originate from a common viral infection known as human papillomavirus (HPV). This virus makes skin cells increase in size and thickness, which is why you experience the lumps and bumps commonly associated with warts of the lower extremities.

Human papillomavirus enters your body when you have a compromised area in your skin. Even a tiny cut can allow HPV to enter your body. You have an increased chance of developing this condition if you:

  • Have a history
  • Have a weakened immune system
  • Are younger as this condition is more common among children and teens

If left untreated they may cause pain and can even spread to other areas of your body.

Treatment for foot warts

Your podiatrist may recommend the following treatments:

  • Injections to destroy the actual virus
  • Freezing the area (cryotherapy)
  • Prescribed topical medications
  • Laser treatments

In some cases, surgery is an option to eradicate warts from a specific area
